This side-entrance gate was built with an automatic opener and a sunburst design.

The sunburst design was sprayed with a rust inducer to contrast the gate’s frame and wood. I also treated the screws on the sun rays with the rust inducer so they’d blend into the design.

A gate was added on the opposite side of the yard with the same

colored stained wood.

A front entrance gate was built and carried on

the design on top of the sealed wood.

option to open both and pull a vehicle or trailer in the back.

Trex composite wood was used to ensure a maintenance free gate while

retaining a neighborly fenced look.

Total fence length is 12ft x 6ft high.

This gate was built with the convenience of both an automatic gate opener and a side-entrance gate.

Privacy, security, and added real estate  for the dogs were also the goals.

The side-entrance gate was keyed the same as the main house’s doors.  The 3′x6′ driveway gate swings freely on greased ball-bearing hinges welded to a concrete-filled square tube measuring 4″x4″ and 3/16″ thick. Both gates feel firm and stout for their daily use.

They blend nicely on the side of the house.

There is a lot of work to be done here, so you’ll be seeing many other May house related projects  posted on this site. For starters, we needed a gate across the driveway, for added security and to give the dogs a closed-in yard to play in.

Lets get started!

First, every job requires safety cones, flags, and a phone call with a long-handled tool to lean on, so as to look busy and also important.

After making cut-outs in the sidewalk for the steel pipes, my assistant and I set the pipes into the ground with concrete.  We filled the pipes with more concrete for

maximum rigidness.

And inspected thoroughly.

I had built the frames to the gatesoff-site, so they’d be ready to weld into place.

Anacelie stained and sealed the cedar wood planks in a variety of earth tones.  We screwed them into the frame, one by one, to achieve a random pattern.

Nearly done!

All we lack is a door handle and dead bolt for

the walk-through gate, and an automatic gate opener for the swing gate.

We celebrated the installation with a striped popsicle. Now my dogs are able to visit without running off.  Don’t see the dogs in the above photos?  Exactly.

The before shot shows what the new fence is replacing.

The gate allows access to park a vehicle on the side of the house, adds privacy, and offers security with a steel locking gate.

The challenge was working in a tight space–room for the gate to open, and room for a vehicle to pass through.

The distance is about 13 feet across, but the house’s eaves hang over for 2 of those feet.

This only left a little over 10 feet for the gate opening, and with the only swing option

being a right hinge that opens out, I was left with the option of a one-post mount.

(I should add that the vehicle they plan on parking here is an RV, so the height clearance of

the eaves mattered.  This is why I bumped out the fixed section of the gate two feet–so

they wouldn’t tear off their roof when backing in.)

Normally, I don’t like hanging gates over five feet on one post,

but as the height is at five feet and the gate is wood-filled, its

weight comes in at a little over 200 lbs, which isn’t too bad.

I compensated with a massive concrete ballast, a 4 x 4 x 3/16 post

filled with concrete, and re-bar.

The result was a free-swinging gate that still offered sufficient room to back in the RV.

configuration but different in style.

The owners designed the railings

and I built and installed them.

They are powder coated a bronze metal flake.

The Rooster and the fish have actually been there since the opening

of the fair. I did win second place with the Rooster!

Joesph Leyba is also showing two pieces in the Hispanic arts,

The Virgin De Guadalupe and a cowboy piece.

He is happy to pose for the camera and thinks he’s much bigger than he really is. He’s 19 inches tall and 12 inches wide with his wings partly out. Feathers are perforated and cold-rolled steel along with some stainless steel.
